Neumann Closes out the 2006 Season at the NCAA Softball Championship
The Knights fall 8-4 to King's College
May 12, 2006
Neumann closes out the 2006 Season at the NCAA Softball Championship
with 8-4 Loss to Kings College
Neumann College finished up a historic season today in Salisbury,
Maryland, with a loss to Kings College 8-4. In the battle to avoid
elimination, both teams fought with class, force, and determination.
After a stellar play by first baseman Traci Reed, Kings had two outs on
the board. Freshman pitcher Angela Sebasto had some difficulties with
the strike zone which resulted in three consecutive walks. This
struggle at the plate proved to set up Kings College's Leanne Harvey who
scored a 2-RBI double to put King's up 2-0.
Although Neumann executed seven base hits, including a two-run homer by
freshman pitcher Angela Sebasto, they were only able to score four runs.
Sebasto's hit was what Neumann needed to tie the game in the second
inning, yet King's retaliated with a solo home run in the third,
followed by a 2-RBI singles in the fourth and an unearned run in the
fifth which added to their lead.
Neumann's Kirsten Lawlor hit her second double of the day when she led
off in the top of the fifth inning for the Knights. Kim Zlupko followed
with a single up the middle to keep Neumann in the game. Both Knights
crossed the plate at home on passed balls which helped the Knights
effort to close the gap on the regional opponents. However the Knights
valiant efforts were not enough, as King's scored two more runs in the
sixth inning and was finally able to shut down the Knights in the top of
the seventh to take the win.
In her second NCAA Championship game, Sebasto pitched 5.2 innings. She
allowed only one earned run on seven hits before Head Coach Bill Saar
elected to bring in sophomore Kelli Ann Meehan to close.
With the close of the season, Neumann can proudly claim three landmark
achievements. The softball team now holds it's first-ever conference
tournament title, has made it to the first NCAA Division III Regional
championship, and maintains the record for the best season in school
history.

Cameron found Jensen on a counter-attack at 18:06, before Natalie Schroeter (Reisterstown, MD/Garrison Forest) made it 5-1 two minutes later.
Roth snapped a 12-minute scoring draught for Swarthmore and Stephanie Kaysen (Media, PA/Penncrest) reached back to take her shot on a pass Jenna Werley (Springfield, PA/Springfield) for a 6-2 lead.

In true playoff fashion, the game came down to the final 4:37 to determine a winner. Cameron and Jensen found the back of the net, but de Regt and Heidi Fieselmann responded with two goals to keep it tied.
Both teams exchanged goals for the last time, before Jensen scored her third goal of the day at 4:37 to break a 9-all tie for the game winner. From there, Jensen assisted Kaysen and Werley made it two assists on the day after dishing the ball to Cameron to clear the path to the semifinals.

WEST CHESTER, PA – The Wildcats of Wilmington College continued their struggling ways as they dropped two close games (4-3; 8-6) to the host Golden Rams of West Chester University in non-conference softball action on Monday afternoon.
Wilmington could not support a stellar outing by junior hurler Nikki Shallcross, as the ‘Cats managed to leave seven runners on base for the game. West Chester put an unearned run on the board in the bottom of the first inning, but Wilmington rallied to tie the game in the fourth when freshman Jamie Gallagher knocked an RBI double to plate Jaclyn Temple. The Golden Rams added three more in the fifth to give the hosts a 4-1 advantage. Wilmington did not go down fighting, as the ‘Cats scored two more runs in the sixth, on another RBI double by Gallagher. The Wildcats mounted a charge late in the seventh, but Amanda Mucaria went down looking with two runners in scoring position.
For the game, freshman Jamie Gallagher led the way, going 2-3 with 3 RBI’s. Junior outfielder Jaclyn Temple and senior second baseman Casey Bradford each went 2-4 with a run scored, while sophomore shortstop Nicole Hays added a double and a run scored. Shallcross went six strong innings, giving up only 8 hits, 3 earned runs, and 1 walk, while striking out a season high seven batters.
The Wildcats squandered away numerous opportunities in the second game, and came away with the 8-6 loss. Sophomore centerfielder Shustine Wilson opened the game with a double to right center and was later brought home by a Nicole Hays hit. Trailing by one, 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning, Wilmington broke the game open when Jaclyn Temple doubled home Kristen Clark and Danielle Hamilton as she nestled one in right on the right field line. The ‘Cats added another two runs in the fifth when Nicole Hays led off the inning with a double to right center. Two batters later, freshman Kelly Schirmer connected on her first collegiate home run, a deep shot to straight away center field, and gave the visitors the 6-3 lead. West Chester picked up a run in the fifth on a solo home run by Meghan Halberstadt. With daylight fading fast, the Golden Rams ended the game on a three run home run by Halberstadt, her second of the game.
Junior outfielder Jaclyn Temple led the way for the ‘Cats, going 2-3 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored. Sophomore Shustine Wilson went 2-4 with a run scored, while senior Casey Bradford chipped in with two singles. Sophomore Nicole Hays picked up a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Freshman Kelly Schirmer went 1-3 with a run scored and 2 RBI’s, while fellow frosh Jamie Gallagher added an RBI for the ‘Cats. Sophomore Danielle Leader started the game, going 5 innings, giving up 6 runs (5 ER). Junior Nikki Shallcross came into the game in the bottom of the sixth, giving up 2 hits, and 2 runs while taking the loss. Shallcross dropped to 1-7 on the year.
Following the games, Wilmington dropped to 2-10 overall on the season, while West Chester improved to 8-4 on the year. The Wildcats return to action tomorrow afternoon when they begin Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play as they host the Warriors of Nyack College in a double header beginning at 2:30 PM at Asbury Field.

Neumann softball opened up PAC play with two wins against Cedar Crest
College. The Knights won game one, 6-0, and game two, 9-1. Neumann
returns to action on Saturday, hosting Eastern University in a double
header at 12:00 p.m.
Knight's Pitcher Kelli Ann Meehan held the opposition scoreless for the
first six innings of the contest. A base hit in the second inning by
Caitlin Hanrahan (Springfield, PA/Springfield) followed by two doubles
in the third by Kim Zlupko (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Danielle
Hayes ( Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley), helped Neumann get ahead 3-0 in
game one.
Meehan continued shooting down the Falcons, shutting down Cedar Crest
6, 7, 8 in the fifth and 9, 10, 11 in the sixth. A Lauren Gallagher
Lauren Gallagher (Parkesburg, PA/Home School) sixth inning triple set
the Knights up for three more runs going up 6-0 before taking the field
for the final inning.
In the seventh inning Cedar Crest broke up Meehan's no hitter with two
singles, the first by Sarah Campbell and the second by Alyssa Kabet.
However, stellar defensive play by the Knights helped to put away the
conference foe as Neumann's Traci Reed (Havertown, PA\Haverford)
combined with Hayes and Zlupko for the first and last outs of the
inning. On the mound Meehan, now 5-0, struck out 8 to earn the win.
The two teams returned to the field shortly after, for the second game
of the series. A double by Zlupko in the second inning started things
off for the Knights. The Falcons Allison Holland walked Hays only to
come face to face with Hanrahan. The freshman catcher hit the ball over
the fence for a three run homer which proved to be all the Knights would
need to sweep the season series. Freshman Angela Sebasto (Trenton,
NJ/McCorristin), who was on the mound for the Knights in game two, gave
up five hits and stuck out three.
Pre game Notes: The Neumann Knights and the Cedar Crest Falcons first
met in the Spring of 1997. The Knights hosted the Falcons on March 19th
of that year. That game started a 7-game series winning streak for the
Knights against the PAC conference foe and has led the Knights to a 12-4
series advantage over the Falcons in program history. The two teams last
met in Disney, Florida on March 19, 2006. In that match up the Knights
defeated the Falcons by a score of 4-2.
