Marple Newtown works quickly in wrestling win
By JOE SANTOLIQUITO, Special to the Times01/26/2006
NEWTOWN SQUARE - Haverford High School's wrestling team was there Wednesday night. So was Marple Newtown's.
A nice crowd was on hand, too for the Central League wrestling match, but the only one who was moving with any alacrity was Marple Newtown Athletic Director Dr. Ted Aceto.
Aceto was anxiously pacing the hallway leading into the Marple Newtown gym waiting - like everyone else - for the junior varsity referee to show up. The wait pushed the varsity match back at least 40 minutes. But the Tigers made up for the lost time, posting pins in four of the first five matches on their way to a 53-21 victory over Haverford.
It marked the first time this season Marple Newtown won two-straight matches, improving to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the league.
Haverford's Tom McAnally was awarded a forfeit at 103. Marple Newtown then received pins from Bobby Scheb (112) and Mike Flynn (119), got a technical fall from Anthony Pizzi (130) and then two more pins by Mike Pizzi (135) and Steve Flynn (140). Teddy Townsend (189) also won by fall for the Tigers.
The pins enabled the Tigers to make up for some lost time, and it was good thing, too. Both schools have finals today. "We were all a little hungry for this match, but the waiting around was a little frustrating," Townsend said. "It's something you worry a little bit about, because you warm up and you get ready. The waiting can cool you down. Our big thing going into this was being aggressive."
If there was a plus for Haverford, it was junior heavyweight Brian Ellixson, as he's been all year.
Ellixson, ranked No. 1 at heavyweight by the Daily Times, remained undefeated at 18-0, though was severely tested by Marple Newtown's Perry Koliatsis.
It turned out to be the match of the night.
Koliatsis was looking for a monumental upset. Why? Because the two-way senior lineman for the football team was wrestling for the first time. Koliatsis had to cut weight and shrivel down to 275-pound limit, up from weighing as much as 325 at the end of football season. Koliatsis even had to work out a few hours Wednesday afternoon to make 275.
But for three periods, he battled Ellixson hard. The pair were tied, 1-1, after a Koliatsis escape early in the third period. With less than 30 seconds left in the match, Ellixson used his vast experience and scored a two-point takedown for a 3-1 lead. Koliatsis defiantly pulled within range with a one-point escape, but time expired before he could tie it.
"I knew he came down from around 325, or 330 and that's a lot of body to get around," said Ellixson, who is receiving feelers from Division I schools for football. "But this match wasn't too bad. I knew I could out work him, I knew I could wear him down."
Koliatsis was elated. Mobbed by his teammates after Ellixson had his hand raised, the senior wrestling novice was treated as if he won. In some ways, he did.
"It was a fun way to get into wrestling, facing the best in the county," said Koliatsis, who plans on making weight the rest of the year. "I started both ways for the football, so I knew Brian. I knew he was No. 1, but I wasn't intimidated by him. I thought I was stronger. I wouldn't let him push me around. I just wanted to prove that I hand with the top guys."
Tigers coach Rich Graham was certainly pleased with Koliatsis. Graham had gone over moves and worked with Koliatsis to a few hours before the match to cut weight. "I thought his conditioning was fine, considering what he had been through, working two hours before this, that takes a lot out of you," Graham said. "I was really pleased with Perry."

Wrestling: Haverford’s Meyers sees efforts rewarded
February 02, 2003
By BRIAN FREEMAN bfreeman@delcotimes.com HAVERFORD -- If patience was gold, Kevin Meyers would be a millionaire. The Haverford High senior 112-pounder toiled on the Fords’ junior varsity for three seasons, before finally breaking into the varsity lineup this year. But before Meyers wrestled his first match this season, he was injured and had to sit out for almost a month until he was healthy enough to join the Fords in late December. Since then, Meyers has been wrestling like gangbusters, helping solidify the Fords’ murderer’s row of lightweights.
Last night, despite battling flu-like symptoms, Meyers earned probably the biggest win of his high school career with a 7-1 decision over Marple Newtown’s Kevin Furman, who came into the bout ranked No. 3 at 112 by the Daily Times.
When Meyers stepped on to the mat, Marple was leading the match, 33-31. When he had his hand raised by referee James Canaday, the father of former Oxford standout Jamie Canaday, the Fords were in front, 34-33.
Mike Glenn then pinned George Balabanion at 119 to clinch the match and give Haverford a 40-33 Central League triumph over the visiting Tigers.
Meyers is now an impressive 11-5. Not bad for a first-year varsity wrestler who had the unfortunate luck of being stuck behind some pretty good wrestlers over the past few years. Names like Jeff Perretta, Kyle Ramplin, Andrew Jones, Mike Glenn, Ted Macnow and Andrew Choi are just a few of the Haverford lightweights who have stood in Meyers’ way. Many other wrestlers probably would have quit when it became obvious they couldn’t crack the lineup. But Meyers just kept plugging, and now he’s a key cog for a resurgent Fords (6-2, 4-2) team. "When you go into a room that has had some of the lightweights we’ve had, you better be good," said Fords coach Jim Jones. "You have to give Kevin credit for sticking it out." Meyers is a free-spirited youngster who has many interests. He is an aspiring chef who plans to attend the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in Pittsburgh next fall. He’s also a talented drummer. Meyers loves drumming, but cooking is his passion. "I love to cook, but at this time of the year, I can’t eat a whole lot," Meyers said with a laugh. "I’d love to be a chef in a warm place some day." When he’s not cooking, you can usually find Meyers banging on the drums. He likes all kinds of music, but he’s especially fond of jazz. Meyers is also a deep thinker. Ask him why he likes playing the drums so much, and he’ll give you an answer that only a physics major could appreciate. "What I like about it is the independence of each hand," Meyers said. "Wrestling actually helps me with drumming." Unlike most wrestlers, Meyers doesn’t feel much pressure before and after he steps on the mat. The fact that Furman is very talented and was ranked at 112 didn’t faze Meyers in the least. And the fact that the Fords were trailing and Meyers knew he had to win didn’t seem to bother him at all. "I just try to relax before my match," Meyers said. "I knew I had to win my match, but it didn’t really bother me. Truthfully, I didn’t know anything about (Furman). I don’t really focus too much on stats." Sophomore 103-pounder Andrew Jones is 25-2,ranked No. 1 by the Daily Times and leads off Haverford’s crew of lightweights. Meyers has been solid. Glenn has been stellar at 119 after sitting out last season with an injury. Perretta, the All-Delco 103-pounder during the 2000-2001 campaign, is the veteran of the group. If not for those four, 160-pounder Chris Renshaw and 215-pounder Jon Rorer, the Fords might not have prevailed last night in what turned out to be two different matches. After Perretta opened the match with a win by fall in 2:45 over Greg Curry, the Tigers (2-6 league) took six of the next seven bouts to take a commanding 33-10 lead.
Senior Bill Thompson, the Cardinal O’Hara transfer, earned a technical fall victory in 2:12 over Tom Morgan to get things started. After Dan Brubaker accepted a forfeit at 135, Frank Furman, ranked No. 3 at 140, packed Dennis DiMarco in 42 seconds. Matt Moccia followed with a major decision victory over Matt Goodwin at 145, and P.J. Dortone pinned Randy Berman in 4:55 at 152 to give Marple a 27-6 lead.
Renshaw stopped the bleeding at 160 with a 12-4 major decision victory over Roth Perelman, before Marple’s Dave Kaflamazyan accepted a forfeit at 171. From there, it was all Fords, as Craig Cline (189) and heavyweight Joe Arcidiacono accepted forfeits sandwiched around Rorer’s win by fall in 1:16 over Casey Mahron at 215 to make it 33-28. Jones followed with a 6-1 win over Anthony Pizzi at 103 to bring Haverford within two, 33-31, leaving the heroics to Meyers and Glenn. ©The Daily Times 2003
